SUMMARY:Ethan Ward Quiet Concert III: FOLK(ISH) with the Haver String Quartet
DESCRIPTION:Join us for this month’s quiet concert featuring music from FOLK(ISH) with the Haver String Quartet. We have thought about some of the sensory issues that can keep people away from many events and made some small but important adjustments. What we will do differently includes: \n\nAsking audiences for quiet applause\, such as only using 2 fingers from each hand\, patting the leg\, or using the BSL sign for applause\n\n\nKeeping the concert to one hour in length and having breaks between pieces every 10 minutes so that you can move around\, wriggle or chat quietly for a few minutes\n\n\nKeeping light levels low\n\n\nUsing rugs\, cushions and benches as well as chairs so that you can sit how you prefer\n\n\nKeeping numbers down to avoid crowding\n\n\nChoosing relatively quiet instruments from the University’s world-famous Musical Instrument Collection and not using electric amplification\n\n\nScheduling in the afternoon so you don’t have to travel home in the dark or when the streets are too busy\n\n\nProviding a space in the Laigh Hall to escape to if you need it\n\n\nThe musicians who will be performing are all highly skilled\, so you will experience top-quality music making.\n\nIf this appeals to you\, why not come along? SUMMARY:Belesama (Au plaisir des dames)
DESCRIPTION:The Baroque Ménagerie – an exploration of animal and bird life in music from the 16th to the 18th centuries. \nCreatures in music vary from the literal to symbolic & they can also serve as moral inspiration for humanity. Whether it’s the recognisable sound of the cuckoo or the lesson in cunning from the fox\, animals have inspired musicians throughout the centuries. From Biber’s frogs through Clérambault’s oysters to Telemann’s canary\, these vocal and instrumental pieces have their roots in the animal kingdom. Also featuring music by Purcell\, Monteverdi\, Biber and Gibbons. The members of Belesama (Au Plaisir des Dames) have between them a wealth of experience in the worlds of renaissance\, baroque & classical repertoire\, performing and teaching throughout the UK\, Europe and beyond. Their carefully themed programmes explore music from the mediaeval to the late baroque and they specialise in arranging multi-voice pieces for smaller forces\, thus accessing a wide range of musical styles & cultures. \nPlease note that this event is hosted by a partner organisation and not St Cecilia’s Hall. SUMMARY:Sounds of St Cecilia’s V: The Art of the Arranger
DESCRIPTION:The critically acclaimed team of McDonald and Kitchen perform virtuoso works for recorder with continuo and obbligato harpsichord by Bach\, Vivaldi\, Telemann and Corelli\, which also exist in alternative versions. Ever commercially astute\, Telemann often specified idiomatic alternative instrumentation for his works. Arranging Italian violin sonatas for recorder was almost a cottage industry\, and Bach’s recycling of his own music resulted in masterworks such as a solo violin movement becoming a full-scale cantata. Featuring the 1709 Barton harpsichord. ‘Pure delight’ (Scotsman). In support of the FoSCH bursary fund. \n\n\nBook Your Tickets Here

SUMMARY:Sounds of St Cecilia's I: Clair-Obscur
DESCRIPTION:Marin Marais\, Silvius Leopold Weiss and J.S. Bach\, recognised for the extraordinary beauty of their works\, were first admired as virtuosos of their respective instruments: viol\, lute\, and keyboard. As composers and as improvisers\, they took inspiration in each other’s harmonic language and flourishing and particular ornamentation. These three composers are brought together again\, with clair-obscur pieces of indescribable darkness and melancholy\, in contrast with moments of brightness and serenity. Alongside Bach’s keyboard suites\, Khou has adapted for harpsichord some particularly touching pieces by Marais and Weis. Supported by the Keyboard Charitable Trust.\n\n\n\nBook Your Tickets Here
