SUMMARY:Madame Florentine Besson and the Birth of the Modern Trumpet
DESCRIPTION:Join Dr Sabine Klaus as she explores the role of Madame Florentine Besson in the invention of the modern trumpet\, with live demonstrations.\n \n\n\nThe origin of the modern piston-valve trumpet—the trumpet used in most countries today—is often associated with the French firm of Besson. But when and by whom was this iconic trumpet design invented? French patents\, issued to Florentine Besson née Ridoux (1829-1877)\, wife of founder Gustave Auguste Besson (1820-1875)\, unambiguously shine light on her role in the invention of the modern trumpet. Married to Gustave Besson in 1847 at the age of 18\, Florentine was not only the mother of his four children (three daughters and a son) but clearly an equal business partner who was likely trained in the trade by her husband. Be transported into the mid-nineteenth-century world of a competent\, technically savvy\, international businesswoman\, mother and inventor of one of the most influential instruments of the modern age\, the trumpet. Dr Sabine Klaus will be assisted by curator Dr Sarah Deters\, who will demonstrate various trumpets from the St Cecilia’s Hall collections.\n \nDr Sabine K. Klaus is Professor Emerita from the University of South Dakota and most recently served in the role of Mirrey Keyboard Instrument Cataloguer at the University of Edinburgh’s Musical Instrument Museum. From 1999–2023 she was Joe R. and Joella F. Utley Curator of Brass Instruments at the National Music Museum\, University of South Dakota. She is the author of a five-volume book series\, Trumpets and Other High Brass\, published between 2012 and 2024.\n \nPart of the Women’s History Month Celebration Series 2026.\n \nPlease note that\, due to the temporary closure of St Cecilia’s Hall\, this talk will be held at the Centre for Research Collections\, located within the University of Edinburgh Main Library\, NOT at St Cecilia’s Hall.\n \n\n\n\nBook Your Tickets Here

SUMMARY:The Hidden Women of St Cecilia's Hall
DESCRIPTION:Dr Jenny Nex explores and examines the roles\, lives and stories behind the often overlooked women who were instrumental in the making\, selling and collecting of some of the instruments in the collection. \nJenny Nex is Curator of the Musical Instrument Collection and Lecturer in Musical Instruments at the University of Edinburgh\, where her research interests focus on the financial and business operations of 18th– and 19th-century instrument makers. Publications include work relating to London-based firms such as Longman & Broderip and to specific types of manufacture\, including the gut string making trade\, as well as highlighting the roles of women in the instrument business. Following her degree in Music from the University of Edinburgh\, Jenny studied singing at the Guildhall School of Music and continues to sing as much as possible\, notably in the Scottish Chamber Orchestra Chorus. \nPart of the Women’s History Month Celebration Series 2026. \nPlease note that\, due to the temporary closure of St Cecilia’s Hall\, this talk will be held at the Centre for Research Collections\, located within the University of Edinburgh Main Library\, NOT at St Cecilia’s Hall.   \n\n\nBook Your Tickets Here\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Ethan Ward Quiet Concert III: FOLK(ISH) with the Haver String Quartet
DESCRIPTION:Join us for this month’s quiet concert featuring music from FOLK(ISH) with the Haver String Quartet. We have thought about some of the sensory issues that can keep people away from many events and made some small but important adjustments. What we will do differently includes: \n\nAsking audiences for quiet applause\, such as only using 2 fingers from each hand\, patting the leg\, or using the BSL sign for applause\n\n\nKeeping the concert to one hour in length and having breaks between pieces every 10 minutes so that you can move around\, wriggle or chat quietly for a few minutes\n\n\nKeeping light levels low\n\n\nUsing rugs\, cushions and benches as well as chairs so that you can sit how you prefer\n\n\nKeeping numbers down to avoid crowding\n\n\nChoosing relatively quiet instruments from the University’s world-famous Musical Instrument Collection and not using electric amplification\n\n\nScheduling in the afternoon so you don’t have to travel home in the dark or when the streets are too busy\n\n\nProviding a space in the Laigh Hall to escape to if you need it\n\n\nThe musicians who will be performing are all highly skilled\, so you will experience top-quality music making.\n\nIf this appeals to you\, why not come along? SUMMARY:Belesama (Au plaisir des dames)
DESCRIPTION:The Baroque Ménagerie – an exploration of animal and bird life in music from the 16th to the 18th centuries. \nCreatures in music vary from the literal to symbolic & they can also serve as moral inspiration for humanity. Whether it’s the recognisable sound of the cuckoo or the lesson in cunning from the fox\, animals have inspired musicians throughout the centuries. From Biber’s frogs through Clérambault’s oysters to Telemann’s canary\, these vocal and instrumental pieces have their roots in the animal kingdom. Also featuring music by Purcell\, Monteverdi\, Biber and Gibbons. The members of Belesama (Au Plaisir des Dames) have between them a wealth of experience in the worlds of renaissance\, baroque & classical repertoire\, performing and teaching throughout the UK\, Europe and beyond. Their carefully themed programmes explore music from the mediaeval to the late baroque and they specialise in arranging multi-voice pieces for smaller forces\, thus accessing a wide range of musical styles & cultures. \nPlease note that this event is hosted by a partner organisation and not St Cecilia’s Hall.
