SUMMARY:Sypert Early Music Concert - Silent Speech: Ganassi’s Vision of the Human Voice
DESCRIPTION:Anna Stegmann (recorder) & Corina Marti (harpsichord)  \nMusic in the 16th century was closely connected to the human voice\, even when played on instruments. The art of diminution\, ornamenting a simple line\, allowed performers to shape music with expression and individuality. In La Fontegara (1535)\, Silvestro Ganassi presents the recorder not just as an instrument\, but as a means of speech\, capable of expressing a variety of nuances through grances and diminutions. In his treatise\, diminutions become more than decoration—they are gestures of rhetoric\, bringing lines to life.  \nThis programme explores that tradition within the rich musical culture of 16th-century Venice\, where vocal polyphony and improvisation flourished. From the lyrical simplicity of the frottola to the intricate textures of Franco-Flemish composers\, these works invite transformation through instrumental interpretation. Ganassi’s vision unites them: music as persuasive\, expressive utterance.  \nThrough this lens\, instrumental performance becomes a living language\, where breath\, imagination\, and individuality give voice to written notes\, continuing a practice that remains vital and eloquent today.  \n\n\nBook Your Tickets Here

SUMMARY:Edinburgh Quartet Lunchtime Concert
DESCRIPTION:Beethoven’s Op. 18 No. 6 captures the composer at his most playful and searching\, its extraordinary final movement — marked La Malinconia — a glimpse of the revolutionary writing to come. Haydn’s beloved ‘Emperor’ Quartet\, with its great set of variations on the melody that became Austria’s national anthem\, is one of the most deeply satisfying works in the entire quartet canon. \nAt the heart of the programme sits something truly extraordinary: the world premiere of a recently discovered quartet by Pál Hermann. Hungarian-born and tragically killed in the Holocaust in 1944\, Hermann left behind a small but remarkable body of work. To bring this quartet to life for the very first time is both a privilege and a responsibility\, and a reminder of what was silenced and of music’s power to endure. \nPlease note that this event is hosted by an external organisation and not St Cecilia’s Hall.
