DESCRIPTION:In the incredible 18th century setting of St Cecilia’s Hall\, come and hear about Edinburgh’s long historical links with Africa and the Caribbean through music. \nJoin Lisa Williams\, historian and founder of the Edinburgh Caribbean Association\, to hear stories of the African drummer at the Royal Court of King James and Black classical composer and abolitionist Ignatius Sancho who visited Edinburgh in the 1770s. The lament sung by enslaved workers in Barbados brought home by a young Scot and the local tune written to support American orator Frederick Douglass will remind us all of the power of music! \nLisa Williams is an author\, poet and founder of the Edinburgh Caribbean Association and Black History Walking Tours Edinburgh. DESCRIPTION:As a self-taught early music punk\, Attila is honoured to have been invited back to the beautiful surroundings of St Cecilia’s Hall for the fifth consecutive year to perform his Early Music Show with accompanist\, brilliant Scottish singer/songwriter Calum Baird\, on guitar. Attila plays crumhorn\, rauschpfeife\, cornamuse\, five different recorders\, violin and mandola. They’ll be performing Attila’s songs from his 2018 album Restoration Tragedy about the tumultuous events in England after the execution of Charles I in 1649. Tales of Levellers\, Diggers and Ranters and Cromwell’s destruction of their dreams for a better world. \nNo tickets necessary. DESCRIPTION:Musica Antica Rotherhithe\n\nMusic from the Golden Age of Venetian Opera\, 1650-1660. Musica Antica Rotherhithe present cantatas and extracts from operas written for Venice’s public theatres in the mid-seventeenth century\, many of which have lain unperformed for over 350 years.
